Perhaps, that is true. But some questions remain. The other day Reuters and The
Financial Times newspaper published an impressive list of 45 countries whose
governments and private individuals have donated cash to the victims of
tsunami-hit Southeast Asia. At the top of the list are Australia, with over $815
million donated by the government and over $90 million raised by individuals;
Germany gave over $700 million and $200 million respectively, the EU nearly $550
million, Japan $500 million, the United States $350 million and $200 million. At
the bottom of the list are ’petty’ donors, such as Slovakia ($230,000),
Bulgaria ($140,000), Slovenia ($110,000), and South Africa ($100,000).
